Preventive Dentistry

Both natural teeth and teeth with restorations survive best in an oral environment that is clean and where the intake of harmful foods is controlled. Our program is designed to help prevent new cavities, preserve teeth that have been restored and manage periodontal disease. At the initial visit oral hygiene instructions are reviewed and are reinforced at subsequent recall visits. The following are helpful recommendations:

  • Brush your teeth twice a day in a circular motion with a soft bristled toothbrush aimed at the gum.
  • Floss every night in an up-and-down motion while keeping the floss in a U-shape and against the tooth surface.
  • Avoid smoking.
  • Avoid sticky sugary foods.
  • Eat a balanced diet.
  • Use antiseptic and fluoride rinses as directed.
  • Have sealants placed on young permanent teeth.

AAPD recommends child see dentist for first early prevention visit by age 1 or eruption of first tooth.

Having your child keep regular preventative visits every six months or when appropriate based on your child's caries risk.

Brushing 2x daily with fluoride toothpaste, Flossing once a day, Eating a balanced diet, Avoid sticky sugary snacks and drinks that can weaken tooth enamel Antiseptic/Fluoride rinses.

Sealants- give more information on the importance SDF (Silver Diamine Fluoride) on early lesions to minimize the growth of bacteria- This is a big treatment advancement in pediatric dentistry.

Sealants are a protective coating that can be placed on the deep pits and fissures of the adult molars that erupt around six and twelve years old and significantly reduce decay that can form in these areas of the tooth.

Silver Diamine Fluoride is a special form of fluoride that inhibits bacteria progression and growth and is a conservative option we use on early carious lesions.
